Today, science is a part of our daily lives and is the source of important innovation. Many people have difficulty following rapid developments happening around the world which is fast becoming more technology oriented each day. These developments and breakthrough solutions to current challenges, however, are not confined exclusively to science and technology but apply to socio-political-economic decisions that involve the general public. The problem is that the general public often express that they are not included in the dialogue. Likewise, scientists feel that they are not always heard or understood. The solution lies in educating the public about changes currently taking place in the scientific environment and developing critical evaluation skills to allow for more active and responsible participation of the public in decision making about important societal issues. It also lies in cultivating new talent by training tomorrow’s actors in high value added businesses by making science more attractive, particularly for younger generations and by using the scientific approach as an educational tool and not just a source of knowledge, certainly in light of the current explosion of available means to access information. This requires not only developing science education and the scientific process, but also bringing together laboratories, with all of their personal with society, whether it is the general public, businesses, teachers or even school children.
LabEx Strategy —
Since its launch, LabEx ARBRE has committed to a strategic reflection on training and dissemination for non-specialist communities, in parallel and complementary to actions to further develop specialized scientific communities. We have designed this policy to follow two thematic axes: 1. Teaching the research approach, and 2. Communicating with the non-specialist public (see figure). To implement this policy, ARBRE relies on existing structures specialized in scientific and technological culture (STC), not only with our academic partners but also with associations working in this field. Positioned at the interface between the University of Lorraine, AgroParis Tech and INRA, as well as the ONF, CNPF, OEF and Critt-Bois, ARBRE aims to play a leading role in producing STC actions with tree-forest-wood themes with the view of strengthening links between science-society, science-industry and science-education.
Actions supported by ARBRE — Both dissemination of knowledge and the research approach are that much more effective when using a diverse range of media to reach a variety of audiences. For this reason, ARBRE has consistently chosen to support a broad range of initiatives with different impact objectives. ARBRE has been the driving force for several of these actions, such as the training project “Science and Mediation”, the participative research project “Survivors”, and the project “All Researchers in Lorraine” and has additionally contributed to the success of several others not listed here.
