Training-Dissemination

Context

The ARBRE community is recognized as a leading center for multidisciplinary training in scientific issues and professions associated with trees, forest and wood. ARBRE is actively involved with two engineering training programs, forestry engineering at the Paris Institute of Technology for Life, Food and Environmental Sciences (Agro-Paris Tech) and wood sciences and technology at the Higher national institute for timber technologies and industries (ENSTIB), as well as with two masters programs – FAGE (Forestry, Agriculture and Ecosystems Management) and BIOMANE (Biotechnologies, Microbiology, Food, Nutrition and Environment), one advanced Master’s (“Mastère”) program in Forestry, Nature and Society, and one doctoral program called RP2E (Resources, Processes, Products and Environment). These courses are intended to develop innovative frameworks for business, politics and public research. The targeted professions include production (plants, bio-materials), promotion and management consulting (of forests, land, production sectors, biodiversity, and protected areas), research and development, and scientific research. In a context of transition and uncertainty, traditional skills no longer apply. For example, climate change will require rapid adaptation to long-term forest systems in never before experienced environments. It will likewise call for new mitigation measures, by increasing both carbon storage in forests but also mass substitution with bio-materials and fossil fuels. Today’s social and economic contexts are changing: abandonment of agricultural land coupled with increasing urbanization are changing humans’ relationship with the natural environment; globalization is calling for a more comprehensive vision of climate change; the economic crisis and the end of the welfare state have strengthened how forest science and engineering are linked to ecosystem service markets for industry maintenance and land development. New managers need to know how to make full use of current technologies and international networks, how to communicate international standards clearly and concisely, how to experiment, imagine and create. More than ever, the complexity of todays problems require high level training programs anchored to links with science-education and training in research methodology. It will be equally important for new managers to know how to attract bright and motivated new students, and to disseminate our original, interdisciplinary knowledge to the widest audience possible.

LabEx Strategy

The general policy of LABEX ARBRE in support of this initial training is therefore to reinforce i) the attractiveness of our training system and visibility of our most original areas of expertise, ii) internationalization of the training programs, iii) strengthening training programs in research for jobs in production and consulting, especially those programs geared for engineers. To meet these goals, LABEX ARBRE offers support funding for i) implementing and promoting open access training programs (e-learning), ii) higher learning actions supporting doctoral and master’s level studies (research programs, conferences, foreign travel allowances) which strengthen internationalization and promote open communication in science, and iii) organized activities (seminars, internships, introductory training workshops) to boost the image of research for masters students and postdoctoral candidates beginning their careers.
